The fugitive slave appears first literally in the story of Sherman Booth. Joshua Glover, an escaped slave from Missouri, is apprehended and imprisoned in Wisconsin for violating the United States Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

The fugitive slave is also figuratively present in my entertainment micro fiction. Maniac Magee, the white kid that doesn’t know he’s white, finds himself in parts of town culturally illegal for his skin and his status. Although the west end (the black end) comes to be his home all the same, his history of arrival is a pictorial of breaking diegetic cultural law.

The fugitive slave (Joshua Glover) is a rallying point for the Milwaukee abolitionist community; however, as Sherman Booth makes him a “slave to the movement” the fugitive slave (Joshua Glover) continues to liberty in Canada via the Underground Railroad. Glover’s name retains a textual life in Wisconsin newspapers; Glover’s person gains an experiential life north of the border.

When Magee gets out of town he’s taken in by Grayson. No longer subconsciously negotiating his cultural location Magee deals in life directly – he is finally able to learn the melodrama values of life: love, death, and coping.

The fugitive slave is a theme. It’s a head nodder for middle-schoolers taking U.S. history. It has a facial value of righteousness (along with the history of injustice written into its schema’s resonance).

The fugitive slave is the hero-sufferer of another time whose synomical value is only contemporarily recognizable in the most idealistically realistic/realistically ideal persons (maybe MLK).

Booth calls them together. Groups upon groups create a mass. “What a wonderful riot this is.”

It’s tuff to distinguish the faces of all the people (although they are all different). Their voices reach a singularity – “Free the slave.”

Glover has no side. The law is not with him. Those idealistic enough, righteous enough, human enough to stand in the mob and shout and write stories in the paper about him, none of them look like him – there isn’t one of them he could see himself in.

Before Maniac meets Grayson he sleeps in an animal stall in a zoo. It is a mid-point of no location and no mention in my entertainment mico fiction. The story continues nonetheless, not through the eye of the beholder but the non-local voice of the narrator. Maniac’s existence, sleeping in that stall, is a fictional rendition of nuance too transparent for any other expression. Yet even as a text, it is still unseen… unheard – it can only be insinuated from one person to another.
